Precautions
Use lower doses and with more caution when administering to very young animals or animals suffering from hepatic dysfunction, cardiac disease or general debilitation, due to possible prolongation of effect. In horses, paralysis of the retractor penis muscle has been associated with the use of phenothiazine-derivative tranquilizers. This risk should be duly considered prior to the administration of acepromazine maleate to male horses castrated or uncastrated.
Contraindications
Phenothiazine derivatives are contraindicated in animals being treated with organophosphates, succinylcholine or other cholinesterase inhibitors. Epinephrine is contraindicated in the treatment of acepromazine maleate overdose. Because of its hypotensive effects, this drug is contraindicated in animals with hypovolemia or shock.
Warning
Keep out of reach of children. Treated animals must not be slaughtered for use in food for at least 7 days after the latest treatment with this drug. Milk taken from treated animals during treatment and within 48 hours after the latest treatment with this drug must not be used as food. This drug is not to be administered to horses that are to be slaughtered for use in food.
